Kerbside Recycling collections

In March 2002, Gwynedd Council began a pilot scheme to collect recycling material from door to door.  Pwllheli, Criccieth and Porthmadog were the selected areas for the pilot which serviced 3,000 homes.

Every house in the scheme received a blue box.  People were asked to put their papers, bottles and glass jars, cans and textiles in the box and to leave it out for collection every fortnight.  The materials are collected by using a totally different vehicle to the usual collection lorries.  The workmen with the recycling vehicle will sort out the contents of the blue box into purpose made crates in the vehicle.  After filling the crates the lorry will return to the Council's depot where the materials will be transferred into large skips.  The materials will then be transported to a recycling centre.

The recycling has now commenced in the Caernarfon and Bangor area and it will be extended to the rest of Arfon and the northern and western parts of Dwyfor during the next two to three months.

By now they collect over 5 tonnes of recyclable material daily and with the public's support, this amount can increase dramatically.  The system is simple and easy to use.  Help the environment by using your blue box!  For further details please contact Gwynedd Council's Recycling Officer on 01286 672 255 neu recycling@gwynedd.gov.uk.
